In this unit sample as you learn ASL online, you will be learning how to convey distance.
Conveying Distance
You can convey distance with non-manual behaviors. These behaviors specify whether something is far away, moderately far away, or close. You will always sign distances and locations from your (the signer’s) perspective.
To indicate something that is far away, you would:
- Tilt your head (to the right if you are pointing left and vise versa)
- Slightly open your mouth and squint your eyes
- Show the route with your arm fully extended
To indicate something that is moderately far away, you would:
- Tilt your head (to the right if you are pointing left and vise versa)
- Purse your lips (“mm”)
- Show the route with your arm partly extended
To indicate something that is close, you would:
- Tilt your head (to the right if you are pointing left and vise versa)
- Clench your teeth (“cs”)
- Show the route while keeping your arm close to you
These behaviors should come naturally.
